CASE Extended School Year Program

CASE Extended School Year Program

Current state regulations call for public school districts to provide extended year programming for special education students who are at risk for substantial regression during the ten week summer recess.  This requirement forms the basis for the CASE Summer Program.  The CASE Summer Program services the Collaborative’s year-round student population, as well as a number of students who do not attend CASE classes during the winter months.  The program offers a 5 ½ hour school day and runs for five weeks.  Inclusive programming, whereby CASE summer students might join in activities with children who do not have special needs, is not available through this program.  Most summer programs are located in air-conditioned classrooms.

Because it is designed to maintain the skill levels that CASE students have achieved by the end of the regular year and not necessarily to extend them, speech, physical, and occupational therapy schedules may reflect a reduction in amount of weekly service, and the daily activities for the children, particularly during the hottest part of the day, carry a more recreational flavor than would normally be the case at school.  Despite these adjustments, the CASE Summer Program continues the Collaborative’s commitment to small classes, quality instruction, and adherence to the students’ Individualized Education Programs.

It should be noted that the CASE Summer Program represents only one service option for students who need extended year programming.  It cannot be all things for all children, and may not be the right choice for every student in a CASE school year program.  Parents and school department representatives are advised to consider the appropriateness of the CASE Summer Program for their particular child before making a decision regarding application for enrollment.
